Caterpillar, Inc. had a problem on a Tennessee transmission plant assembly line so they called the Caterpillar 3D printing/ additive manufacturing team. This team was able to 3D print a temporary plastic tool and send it overnight to the plant. This saved them from having to shut the line down and lose money and customers in the process. Caterpillar recognizes how relevant 3D printing is to create inexpensive and more environmentally sustainable parts. The company is also looking into making it possibilities for more on-site 3D printing, which would save even more time and shipping costs.
