NASA Tests 3D Printed F-1 Rocket Component

NASA recently successfully tested a F-1 rocket engine that included a 3D printed gas generator component. The data collected during the test will be compared to similar results of a recent test conducted with a vintage F-1 rocket that was performed back in 2013 to see how the 3D printed part worked in comparison to the traditionally manufactured part. Tests on 3D printed rocket components are being conducted to verify if the technology can be helpful in developing NASA’s shuttle replacement, the Space Launch System. NASA has announced that they have completed a new series of tests on their 3D printed rocket engine. Whereas previous tests have involved individual components, the latest tested them together - and they performed admirably. According to a project manager, this brings NASA three quarters of the way to the completion of a fully 3D printed rocket engine, a project that has been years in the making.
