A device called The Winch has been introduced by Zortrax after development by its staff of engineers and Dr. Marcin Feliga of the MEDIQ clinic. This 3D printed machine is designed to aid surgeons in the performance of endovascular surgery to remove varicose veins. During that procedure, a length of fiber optic cable is inserted into the vein and a laser is used to close the vessels from the inside. If that cable is removed to quickly or too slowly, there are negative side effects and the Winch ensures that the removal of the cable occurs at a consistent speed.
