Russ Dunn of GKN Aerospace says additive manufacturing technologies mark a “paradigm shift in engineering design and materials,” and he says a new chair at the University of Sheffield will build on GKN’s existing developments in additive manufacture. The newly established GKN Aerospace RAEng Chair in Additive Manufacture and Advanced Structural Metallics will enable the integration of materials and processes in the short term and to create innovative processes and materials to carry the industry into the future. With a combined £1 million investment from GKN Aerospace, the University of Sheffield, and the Royal Academy of Engineering, for five years, the Chair--with Professor Iain Todd of the University of Sheffield nominated to hold the position--will address three principle goals in AM research.
