Kazuhiko Kakuta, a medical doctor in Japan, is living out not only his dream of making things fly, but has also developed a relaxing and fun hobby building a collection of 3D printed ornithopters. He uses Autodesk 123D to digitally design the ornithopters and then has them 3D printed in nylon by Shapeways. A simple basis of electronics controls the 3D printed birds, with the servo located in the tail assembly. The kestrel design is available in kit form from Shapeways, with others that can be ordered from Kakuta through his website.
