Researchers at UCLA are bringing the technology of 3D printing and microscopy right to your smartphone, in a big way—for looking at very small things. As in DNA. Able to isolate and analyze single strands of DNA just two nanometers across, Professor Aydogan Ozcan and his team have made their innovative device available in a small 3D printed attachment that is able not only to scan data but then send it back to their lab for analysis. This device and its unique abilities should be able to make quite an impact in the field, as they will be able to continue working to diagnose diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and more, as testing will begin in the field for diagnosing malaria.
