When cosplay artists and owner of the Brooklyn based Hero Complex Props, Michael Ruddy, created a 3D printed life size mask of Ultron, he probably didn’t realize that he would be sending me on a cross town journey to a coffee shop and a comic bookstore. If he had, that would be a shocking amount of foresight. Ultron, a super villain in the Marvel Comics Avengers franchise has recently been introduced to a much broader audience through a wildly successful feature film just recently released around the world. Cosplayers are people who enjoy creating and donning costumes and assuming the roles of their favorite (or most favorite to hate) comic characters. It’s no surprise then to see a 3D printed Ultron as the connection between open source 3D print and fan contributions to the lives of comic characters is evident and the popularity of Ultron is on the rise.
