IndyCar driver Charlie Kimball, who races for Chip Ganassi Racing, almost had to face the end of his racing career when he was diagnosed in 2007 with type 1 diabetes. The need to regularly monitor his blood sugar levels and adjust as needed by sipping water or orange juice could have spelled the end of his racing days, if not for his father--and 3D printing. Charlie's father, Gordon Kimball, is an engineer and a problem solver. The father-son duo together worked to create an all-new device, which Gordon designed. The monitor is wearable, and a valve grants in-car access to water/orange juice. The valve was 3D printed by Stratasys Direct Manufacturing using an SLS process.
