Leap Motion Controller for 3D Printers - I don't get it....

Can someone please explain to me exactly what the purpose of having a Leap Motion Controller hooked to a 3D Printer servers? I read an article this morning, but I have no clue what or how a controller would help people with 3D Printers. They make it seem like something that would revolutionize 3D Printing, but I just don't see how. Anyone have any insight?

I'm not so sure what this would be used for either. It's funny the article talks about how this will basically revolutionize 3D Printing, but doesn't explain how. I can even come close to imagining how.

As far as I can tell you're supposed to mould the air above it like some form of invisible virtual clay for organic 3D modelling using the Freeform app.

I can't help but think that this is pretty ridiculous....
If we wanted to mold something with our hands, we could go out and buy clay, not a 3D Printer. Seems kinda crazy, unless I'm totally missing the point.
