This is a rather interesting story, and quite the great use for 3D printing technology. Birmingham City University have created a digital model of a Devonshire Hoard Celtic Cross which was dug up, using nothing but photographs. They created a 3D model and then printed it in wax using a Solidscape 3D printer. Once printed, they used lost wax casting in order to create an almost identical replica. The original was deemed too fragile to be 3D scanned, but using this technique they were able to successfully duplicate the cross. It is now in a museum where visitors can touch and hold it, while the original is held in a protective case by the museum.
