    A working gear ring

Scan a broken object, "fix" it in modeling software and print directly onto the object to repair it

The ability to use a tool to create a tool without help of another tool is unbelievable a few years ago. How will the future look like when we can replicate bio and mass in an instant?

A scanner, a material feeder for different material, some easy buttons, a way to adjust print size and full color painting directly or after print. Basically a 3D printer that is exactly like todays 2d multi printer, but with adjustable sizes and option to input different material.

Enter to win a 3D Printer Challenge!

The most interesting items I have seen done, to date, with a 3D printer and/ or 3D printing technology include the following:
    1) 3D printed houses
http://www.archdaily.com/543518/chin...rinted-houses/ It was a culmination of 12-years in the making to design and build a prototype 3D printer large enough to handle the production needs of a house. This technology will only become more widespread in the future, to keep the cost of construction down, in terms of labor and materials.

    2) Princeton's replacement ears using material from cows
http://mashable.com/2013/05/24/3d-pr...ear-princeton/ Some speculation in the market says this technology of "digital fabrication" will be ready in as little as three-years.

However, some at MIT feel that 20-years is a closer expectation:

    3) Research and Development on constructing replacement bones and tissue for humans, or casting devices to help heal bones and tissue when damaged.

    4) 3D printed metal components

    http://3dprinting.com/materials/meta...rinting-metal/
    http://www.manufacturing.net/blogs/2...ing-with-metal
http://www.appropedia.org/Open-source_metal_3-D_printer I happily support the research and development at my Alma-mater.

The next step in the 3D printing/ digital fabrication industry will be a culmination of both plastics and metals together. If I were to build my own 3D printer, I would design it around the concept of composite design; utilizing the full potential of a solid metal component encased or molded together with plastics to increase the rigidity, strength, shear, tension, torsion (material durability), while at the same time reducing the cost of traditional solid-metal parts. The construction and manufacturing arenas could both benefit for an increased presence of composite production for the loads we traditionally place on objects in real life.

The industry that will benefit from the composite 3D market will be the patent industry. Every day people have so many thoughtful designs that are not always brought to fruition. For some, imagination is all that is needed to bring something to life. Others need to feel/ touch and improve upon the process(es). Nonetheless, 3D printers make this possible; they work in the manner humans think - that is what is mostly important.

Thank you for reading my post!

Creative ways of combining 3d printed parts with other materials and items or as part of a larger project. One example would be a 3d printed surfboard I saw. Another would be a guy who is working on an Aston Martin DB4 replica. He is splitting the body into small parts, printing them, using bondo to bind them together, and using the result as a plug to create a mold from that he can then use to create a fiberglass shell to use as the body of the car. I have also seen some impressive cosplay / halloween outfits made, but that is a little bit more fun and less productive.

If you could build your dream 3D printer, what would it include and what would it do?
I am currently building a fairly large 3D printer for myself that will eventually have dual extruders, so I think a dream printer would do something that current home printers cannot. Perhaps commercial-level print times or home DIYer accessible SLS printing.

Most interesting thing on a 3d printer... Pieces for artificial limb.

dream 3d printer... Would have replacement multiple multifunction heads for additive (3d printing) and subtractive (machining).

The 3d printing of tissue is awesome and super important to this world. I look forward to seeing more 3d printed organs.

I've read about a molecular printer than can basically create anything, I would want that. I would also have it come with a build in construction robot that can do the assembly for bigger pieces.

    - I had a co-op over the summer in 2014 and got a tour of the GE Aviation additive manufacturing facility. The most interesting thing I saw and learned while I was there is that they were printing many different types of metal and actually using metal printed parts in and new engine that was being produced. To think 3D printed parts help fly people all over the world is just mind blowing.

-My dream printer would be a printer milling machining combo. i don't remember what it was called but i saw a printer that would print metal, then mill it to spec halfway through the build. this would make even milling the most intricate parts a 100% easier. That's the kind of printer i would want.

The making of affordable and custom fit prostheses.

    Scanning.
    Print in aluminum.
    Dual print heads.
The ability to print in plastic and mix colors at the print head for a fully colored part.
    Heated chamber for print stability.
Ability to blow a jet of air at the tip of the extruder to freeze the plastic.
    Laser cutting.
    Milling.

In-place 3D printing and adjustment of libs for mine amputees.

A print head that accepts can combine both plastic and metal, so that circuits can be embedded in the structure.
