Possible to convert 2D Photo to 3D printable design?

Has anyone had any success converting 2D photographs into cool 3D designs that are printable? I'm trying to figure out a way to do it, but can't seem to find a reliable method. I know there are services out there that do it for you, but I'd really like to try and do it myself first.

I know this probably doesn't help, but if you can't find a solution. Cokreeate offers reasonable prices for this. They did my wedding photo recently. See http://3dprintboard.com/showthread.p...-cokreeate-com

It is not proper 3D in the general sense but it helps if you intend to make a projection : lithography. The process is on instructables and involves Processing.
