Printer Lubrication - How Often?

I've been curious as to how often one should lubricate their 3d printer. I don't do it very often, and I have noticed that my motor is getting quite noisy. It also feels hotter than normal.
Also what is the best method for doing so. I know that the linear bearings should be greased. What else?

We have never ever lubricated a stepping motor; we have had some in the field for over a dozen years on other products.

IKO recommends lubrication (we use a touch from a WD-40 pen) once every 20,000 km. EDIT: On their linear bearings.

I never really use lubrication. Maybe I should give it a try. I probably forget how clean sounding my 3d printer can be.

I use engine oil on all my rods, bearings, and gears. I've not lubricated within the stepper though. Unless the motor seizes from grime, you probably don't need to worry too much.

Graphite grease with a drop of 10w40 on the smooth rods and liquid lock-ease on threaded rods.
Steppers are usually sealed ball bearings.
