As terrorist organizations such as ISIS wreak havoc on ancient artwork and artifacts, museums have gone beyond picking up the pieces and have been recreating pieces in 3D print. Many of these recreations come from photos given by citizens. Now, Curious Travelers is working to expand this idea in a project that ‘mines data’ and then uses imagery contributed to create 3D models. Their focus is on threatened or damaged sites in North Africa, including Cyrene in Libya, as well as those in Syria and the Middle East—and more as they should become unfortunately apparent.
