Researchers at the University of Passau have developed a pair of smart eyeglasses that utilize electromyography to detect the electrical impulses generated by the muscles in the jaw while chewing. By analyzing how hard the jaw muscles are working, the sensors, embedded in the glasses' 3D printed frame, can detect what the wearer is eating, and thus how many calories they are ingesting. It's not a perfect science at this time, but the prototype, part of a larger project called WISEglass, has the potential to help dieters better assess how many calories they are taking in, versus how many are being burned.
