Last week, the British Royal Navy ran several test flights on the Southampton University Laser-Sintered Aircraft (SULSA) over the Antarctic. The 3kg unmanned aerial vehicle is the world's first 3D printed airplane, and the first UAV that the Royal Navy has used in the Antarctic region. SULSA was put through several 30-minute test flights, during which it took real-time video of the sea over which it flew and streamed the footage back to the ship. A lot of work still has to be done on SULSA, but the tests showed that it has a lot of potential to be used in the future to help ships navigate icy waters.
