A collaborative group of researchers in the UK are working on understanding how cellulose might be used as a building block for 3D printing food. Cellulose is the material that makes up the primary cell wall of green plants and is generally only digestible by ruminants. The efforts of the team are not only to develop methods for 3D printing food, but to better understand how 3D printing provides additional benefits rather than simply reproducing already existing food production mechanisms.
