When 65-year-old Londoner Alexander Spyrou was diagnosed with prostate cancer he was given a chance to examine a 3D printed replica of his prostate that helped him decide to treat the tumor surgically. The 3D model also helped his surgeon Professor Prokar Dasgupta have a clearer image of what his internal anatomy looked like so he could perform the procedure laparoscopically. The 3D model was so accurate that Professor Dasgupta was able to hold it in his hand during the actual surgery and use it as a guide. The 3D model is generated using MRI data and specialized 3D software that maps out exactly where the tumor is, and then turns that data into a 3D printable model.
