A powerful collaboration between researchers at Autodesk and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) will hopefully culminate in greater safety for those playing sports, as they look into making items like 3D printed smart helmets. Employing microarchitectures and microlattices which are fabricated with lightweight metal, sports equipment like the helmet can become intuitive, responding to an impact or load, protecting the player, and then reverting back to its original shape afterward. These new products, being developed with Autodesk’s new Project Dreamcatcher, are expected to completely change the way sports equipment—along with numerous other items—are designed, customized, and manufactured.
