While most of us have a broad knowledge of the giraffe and have seen them in zoos, we’ve probably never put much thought to what their ancestors may have looked like. Researchers at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), University of London are quite interested in doing so, however, and have been studying fossils that have been on hand for quite some time but were considered to belong to a ‘morphologically bizarre’ ancient beast that they thought was probably the precursor to the moose or even antelope. They have concurred, however, with the use of fossils and 3D modeling, that the ancient giraffid, known as Sivatherium giganteum, was indeed the ancestor of the giraffe, and was similar in mass to the African elephant.
