Thread: Raft settings?

    Raft settings?

    Good afternoon folks... So i havent ever printed with rafts before,but i think I have to start doing it. Even on PEI with a brim the part still peels in the corners . Its a fairly dense part about 3 inches x 10 inches, so fairly large too.
    My first attempt at raft settings was 75% infill , .14mm from part, about 15mm out from the part
    2nd one is running now at 50% infill and .2mm from the part.

    Is the 2nd setting more likely to produce better results?

    THe first one i could not detach from the part the top layer of the raft... like at all.

    What do you guys typically use for settings? Im using S3d and a taz 5.
    thanks

    I pulled up the Default Raft numbers, in Makerware-2.4, which is what I use when doing rafts.
    Maybe this will help ?

    "doRaft": true,
    "defaultRaftMaterial": 0,
    "doMixedRaft": false,
    "raftAligned": true,
    "raftBaseAngle": 0,
    "raftBaseDensity": 0.7,
    "raftBaseLayers": 1,
    "raftBaseRunGapRatio": 0.8,
    "raftBaseRunLength": 15.0,
    "raftBaseThickness": 0.3,
    "raftBaseWidth": 2.5,
    "raftInterfaceAngle": 45,
    "raftInterfaceDensity": 0.3,
    "raftInterfaceLayers": 1,
    "raftInterfaceThickness": 0.27,
    "raftInterfaceWidth": 0.4,
    "raftModelSpacing": 0.34,
    "raftOutset": 4,
    "raftSurfaceAngle": 0,
    "raftSurfaceLayers": 2,
    "raftSurfaceThickness": 0.27,

    So i just ran another print with the raft settings using s3d

    3 layers
    .2 separation distance
    50% infill.

    all the lower infill did was make the part peel and pull the infill raft wherever it wanted. Did nothing to make the stuff easier to get off.
    here is an image.

    since i never use rafts, I am not sure why these settings arent producing, as they seem to be pretty standard.

    Does you slicer software not have the same setting options as those I listed ?
    You probably need to check All of them .

    Wow !!! We are Shocked ! HeeHee

    Sorry about that, I know you are having a Real problem and I wish I could help more.
    But really the first thing I would do is try Different slicer software, to see if that improved the rafts.
    That would give an indication as to where the problem really is.

    What material are you using and what is your bed temperature?

    Here are the settings I use for S3D and a flashforge knock off (Powerspec 3D Pro).
    Layers: 2
    Offset from Part: 2.00
    Separation Distance: 0.20
    Raft Infill: 70%

    I get pretty good results with Inland ABS. Rafts can be difficult to removed. I use a razor blade to help shave it off. I'm also considering bumping the separation distance up a bit to 0.25 to make it easier.

    You might also consider using a glue stick or ABS slurry instead of a raft. Some people prefer that.

    Ive tried everything with my 4 printers to get parts to stick. PEI (sanded) is the best. Slurry, glue, does nothing for the types of parts some of my customers require. The only option i had for my last customer was creating a custom brim. just create .4mm parts that i would combine in s3d and make a strong part. The difference with that way, vs the brim feature in software is that the brim in software is not part of the part, its a layer apart.. and thus, doesnt work.

    90c bed temp. Hatchbox abs, which is always my fav.

    Raft not sticking:

    - Using ABS in cabin that is not enclosed
    - Bed incorrectly trammed i.e. too high.
    - Bed not heated.
    - Bed not treated i.e slurry, hairspray, tape, sugar water, etc...
