Thanks to Mimics, a software suite from Materialise, scientists were able to get to the bottom of a 430,000-year-old murder mystery. Using CT scanning and Mimics’ advanced 3D scanning software, 52 pieces of a Pleistocene Era-skull and the lethal assault that killed the 20-something hominid, were reconstructed by researchers at the Centro Mixto UCM-ISCIII de Evolución Comportamiento Humanos (Joint Center of Evolution and Human Behavior) in Madrid. One rather dismal conclusion the investigative team provided was that, unfortunately, murder seems to be as old as humankind itself.
