Medieval Bone Crypt Brought to Life With 3D Scanning

Archaeologists and technology experts have teamed up to create state-of-the-art, 3D scans of a rare ossuary (bone crypt) in England, one of two remaining such sites that date from the middle ages. The Rothwell Charnel Crypt is being scanned by members of the Sheffield University Department of Archaeology and the school’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), with the support of Boeing in a very unusual joint effort. Using a Leica ScanStation P20 laser radar scanner, they are capturing the crypt’s interior to produce a virtual reality model of the inside of the ossuary. I like this use of technology. The ancient 'physical' places won't be around forever; its great that they can be preserved this way (as opposed to just photographs and records.
