Turn an MP3 into a 3D Printed Vinyl Record

This has to be one of the cooler stories I have seen in the industry this last week. Remember those old vinyl records we all had back in our youth? Well, they are making a bit of a comeback with the help of 3D Printing. Amanda Ghassaei, who is a DIY project site team member for Instructables, has figured out a way to turn mp3 files into 3d printed records, using an Objet Connex500 Printer. The records she prints out have as many as 4 million different grooves, and work similar to a regular record. Having said this, the grooves on Amanda's records are deeper and wider, meaning they can't exactly hold as much as a traditional piece of vinyl. She hasn't perfected the science yet, but is doing an awesome job. This is what a finished record looks like.

Here is a look at a zoomed in section from Amanda's CAD 3D model. You can see all the grooves in just a small cross section of the record:

Now let's listen to some 3D printed Nirvana....literally!
