How do people make articulated models?

I have seen a lot of really cool 3D printed things that have joints built into them. I would like to works on some pose-able models of my own, but I'm not sure how people create the joints in their models. Does anyone here know anything about the programs and methods used?

    Add Marm on Thingiverse
    Very carefully.

Look at thingiverse items, search "joint" for example. There are many ball joints and other types that can be printed as one or multiple pieces. It all depends on the application you are aiming for. Some might need a firm tight fit, some could be loose.

Others here could expand upon posable models, but a ball joint with tight tolerances and fit would work.
