3D Printed Replica Bell From HMS Erebus

The Canadian government and the Royal Ontario Museum are sponsoring an exhibition on an important episode in early Canadian history, the tragic ending of Rear Admiral Sir John Franklin’s 1845 expedition to locate the Northwest Passage. This past fall, researchers with the help of Inuit elders, were able to locate one of Franklin’s ships, the HMS Erebus. While the ship has decayed extensively on the ocean floor, its brass bell survived. A 3D printed replica of the bell is the centerpiece of the exhibition, which will travel this coming year to seven cities in Canada. Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Canadian geospatial software company CARIS, and the geomatics technology innovation support center TECTERRA have joined forces to create high-precision, 3D printed models of the HMS Erebus, one of the ships from Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated 1845 expedition to find the Northwest Passage. Missing for over 150 years, the wreckage of the HMS Erebus was found in September 2014. The 3D scale models will be used to prepare a major dive and exploration of the wreck site in the Canadian Arctic this spring.
