Often it’s collaboration between patients and doctors that leads to the best results, and hopefully that will be the case for Kami Sutton, who is optimistic that a 3D printed model will help doctors in her next surgery. Sutton was born with her heart on the right side of her body instead of the left, and has undergone 19 surgeries in her 26 years. Now, with the prospect of restoring greater function to her body with a bi-ventricular pacemaker, her doctor has, at her prompting, made a 3D printed model of her heart, even imitating true cardiac tissue. Using the 3D printed model as a tool to map out her heart may be just the technology they need to ensure a safe and successful surgery.
