I like lithophanes. A couple of decades ago, i wrote a piece of software which separated out pixel layers from a photograph, which i then used to etch out flashed glass (hand blown glass with a thin layer of colour on one side) using hydrofluoric acid. Each pixel (0.1" in size) of resist had to be removed individually at the right layer height. The process was obviously very dangerous and only a couple of pieces came out well. This was a type of primitive lithophane, long before i knew what the process was called.

Mr. Ransen's "blogspot" is a not so blatant ad promoting his software, called Photomesh, which creates lithophanes. At U$59, it seems a bit pricey considering that 3dp.rocks is a free cloud utility which appears to do basically the same thing. Disclaimer: I haven't checked out Photomesh in detail - it might do more than 3dp.rocks.
