After releasing an article about building a Wimshurst Influence Machine for an issue of Make: magazine, the idea was still in the forefront of Jake von Slatt’s mind. As he was removing the flat portion of the bed on his 3D printer he noticed a build up of static electricity. Whether it was the shock or simply the connection of ideas, he decided to experiment with creating a Wimshurst machine through 3D printing. The Gothic looking machine that he produced has managed to create a ½” spark but has still not been able to perform to the standard of the machines he has produced using other methods. He continues to experiment and has also released the files for the machine through Thingiverse so that others may continue to tinker, possibly with greater success.
