3D Systems No Longer Working on Project Ara

The much-anticipated Project Ara, Google's touted foray into modular smartphones, will go on -- but, it seems, without 3D printing. While Google and 3D Systems have been in highly publicized collaboration toward the creation of the modular smartphone design, Paul Eremenko, Google's director of Project Ara, recently sat down with Mitch Daniels, the President of Purdue University. During their taped talk, Eremenko stated that 3D printing will not be their technology of choice to make the shells for Project Ara. He remained very positive about the future of additive manufacturing, and it seems likely that Google will eventually look to 3D printing. 3D Systems, for its part, will continue to work on the racetrack-like architecture that will speed mass additive manufacturing. I would hope that the modules stay in securely. Hate to drop the phone and have all of the modules fly apart. I suppose that's better than damage, but screens are still at risk anyway.
