When three killer whales traveled approximately 70 miles up the freshwater river of the Nushagak River, it eventually led to their deaths. After examining the body of one of the female whales, it was determined that she had been pregnant and an effort was made to retrieve and preserve both her skeleton and that of her fetus. Given the fact that the baby's skeleton was not yet fully formed and still largely cartilaginous, it was determined that the best way to preserve the skeleton was to 3D scan each piece and then 3D print it.
