Researchers foresee a day in the near future when color might be produced by 3D printing particular nanostructures rather than the addition of pigments and chemicals. All of this is thanks to one researcher's interest in the way in which a particular type of tarantula creates its beautiful blue coat. While materials scientists have known about structural color for some time, what was confounding its practical application was its iridescent nature. The nano structures in the hairs of the Cobalt Tarantula don't have that property and provide color consistency over a viewing angle of 160 degrees.
