Ocean Alliance, a whale conservation organization, devised a non-invasive way to collect samples from whales: the Snotbot, a drone that hovers over a whale and captures water, cells, bacteria and other material when the whale exhales from its blowhole. The solution wasn't perfect, however, as it was difficult to ascertain the exact height of the drone above the whale, which is important for an optimal reading. Students from Ipswich High School came to the rescue, using their knowledge of robotics - as well as 3D printing skills - to devise an altimeter that obtained and reported accurate height readings.
