3D Printing to Hit Injection Molding Companies Hard
Of all the industries that will at some point be disrupted by 3D printing technology, it is the injection molding and high-volume manufacturing market that will probably take the largest hit. As competition grows, even moldmakers and injection molding companies find themselves under pressure to increase their production times. In a case study from Plastics Today, Polymer Conversions explains the process that the company went through while deciding how and in what way they would incorporate 3D printing into their production workflow. By far the biggest hit must be the prototyping companies. 3D printing will never interfere with injection moulding, it can't compete at any level but one off manufacturers have already been hit by it.
I personally have not used any of the small engineering companies since I got a 3d printer and that must be repeated all over the world. Admittedly those companies now have 3d printers but they have lost the customers as people make their own at home.
