Jōmon pottery, which dates back to at least 12700 BCE, is some of the oldest known pottery in Japan. An Ontario-based retired archaeologist owns a rare Jōmon vase that still happens to be in one piece, but, like any ancient object, it's extremely fragile and unlikely to stand up to the kind of close study needed for researchers to learn more about it. So a team of professors, students and medical professionals from Mohawk College, Siemens Healthcare, and Trillium Health Partners collaborated to create a perfect replica of the vase using 3D scanning and printing.
