Researchers at Tufts University have discovered that silk may be the answer to overcoming some of the challenges currently being found in bioprinting. In using a variety of materials for 3D printing cellular structures, bio-inks and other equipment and materials are currently limiting researchers enough to stall progress. With the silk matrix and its properties, which do not require harsh processing, David Kaplan and his colleagues think they may have found a potential bio-ink that will allow for much greater progress in 3D printing of tissue, implants, and possibly even organs in the future.
