The Popp Group, a German design firm, say they used 3D printed door hinges to help a customer cut the cost of producing their line of medical cabinets. Holger Ried of the Popp Group says the idea was to produce an adjustable hinge which contained identical, and he says that compared to 3D printing, laser sintering or CNC cutting were just too expensive. The Popp Group began the process with a series of hand drawings they used to define the basic outlines of the pieces, rendered those drawings in 3D using SolidWorks, and then printed them in PLA for client testing and evaluation.
