The production of viable living cells and tissues has been a research focus for several decades--and often involving 3D printing technologies. Several innovative studies have been done regarding the ExtraCellular Matrix (ECM) that acts as the scaffolding for cell growth. Among these studies are papers entitled "New Self-Assembling Multifuctional Templates for the Biofabrication and Controlled Self-Release of Cultured Tissue” and “Three Dimensional Printing of Hela Cells for Cervical Tumor Model in Vitro,” as well as older research out of the Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University.
