Students from Shanghai, China's Tongji University have taken a step forward in demonstrating the viability for 3D printing in the manufacture of end-use automotive components. At this week's International Technology Import and Export Fair at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition, they displayed an innovative single-seat electric race car with an incredible amount of high-tech production in it. The car weighs only about 30% of a typical similar car would, and this lightweighting comes thanks in large part to the more than 360 3D printed parts involved in its manufacture. Many of the internal structural components, including within the engine, were 3D printed from aluminum.
