Researchers from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno are working toward a clever solution for those interested in coming up with a 3D model of a 2D object, but who don't have either a 3D scanner or CAD/CAM modeling experience. Waldo3D, their idea, works in a simple four-step process to take a user from a simple photo upload to an STL model. While Waldo3D works as a search platform, finding the closest 3D rendering possible to the uploaded file, thus not necessarily coming up with a picture-perfect match, as the repository of files grows the closeness will increase.
