Quality varies front to back??

Perhaps try increasing or decreasing the speed of the parts cooling fan. Do you have a shroud on the cooling fan to better direct the flow? I've found that for PLA, when dealing with overhangs, and even small details, a cooling fan is an absolute must, otherwise parts just curl or glob up way too easily.

i can tone it down a little bit, ive always just run it at 100%.. even at 100% its hard to feel the air flow, but i realize even a small amount can make a difference.

Just printed the same cube at 1mm and it came out really nice as well... printing it very fast too at like 60-70mm/s i should slow it down and see how good i can get it.
I think as far as PLA is concerned i am quite happy with the results.
