The easiest way to see which one is the best is to buy one of each to test it out. After print, try break it, the result will be direct!
HP´s printer..not sure if it will rock the market as we think it will, it is still an expenive machine.
If you have not touched the firmware there should not be any problem with PID, check the thermocouple or other mechanical thing that may interupt.
There are tons of 3d printer out there, why not go with a cheap one for starters? When you get more hang of it just upgrade.

Ehum, PLA is bio-degradable with glass transition starting at 60 degree. All kind of hot liquid is therefore not acceptable.
I would avise just to use cold watermixed with soap to clean it.

These pen are as somebody say a extruder pen, basically just melt the filament, but that is not the point. The point is you can actually build things with it layer for layer manually. It is quite fun...

Try some of our printer, have some for industrial grade but with the price for a home desktop printer.
You can 3d printing in anything that can be melt and become solid again. Then of course it depends if your machien setting is capable of it!

If you can smell burning things, then something do not sounds right, you have double check it. As it seems the board get to much Voltage hence it auto turn off!?
Why not just buy a Geeetech Prusa kit? 260 USD excl freight.
I would say any Prusa i3 is fine, it is the same machine. Buying pieces, sourcing part of it is hella lot of time,.
