When parents-to-be Alicia and Matt learned that their unborn daughter, Violet, would suffer from a rare and dangerous facial birth defect, they found little comfort in their local doctors’ inexperience with such cases. After searching diligently for answers, the Oregon couple came to the doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital where they began preparation for a surgery that will change their daughter’s life. The team of specialists consists of a craniofacial plastic surgeon, a neurosurgeon, and a simulation specialist who has been instrumental in the introduction of 3D printing as a preparatory tool for the surgeons. Having access to a physical model of Violet’s skull allowed the surgeons to prepare and will aid in attaining the best possible outcome for the procedure.
