Japanese company Shimizu has unveiled a conceptual design for an underwater city, in their Ocean Spiral concept. The tethered city would descend 75 stories below the surface of the sea and be capable of sustaining a population of around 5,000 inhabitants. A long coil would plunge into the sea and utilize the temperature difference between surface waters and deep sea waters to generate thermal power. The spherical shell of the city is envisioned as being produced in place by 3D printing.
