Inredibly Detailed 3D Print of San Francisco Bay

Eric Pavey is a resident of the San Francisco Bay area, and as homage to the beauty of the landscape, he endeavored to make a topographical map with 3D printing. After discovering the Terrain2STL tool, he was able to easily create an .stl file for 3D printing with his Makerbot Replicator 1. The process required some refining along the way, and the Terrain2STL tool is still not fully developed, but the end result was very impressive and will likely serve as an inspiration to others interested in depicting specific landscapes. Excellent work!

As a topological map fan let me suggest the service of www.shapeWerk.com, where you can generate colored terrain models within seconds.
It comes with dynamic texture mapping and vertical exaggeration sandbox - all free.
Once you are satisfied you can order a color 3D print of any size, starting from 35cm x 25cm (14" x 10").
