Researchers 3D Print a Knee Cap
An orthopedic surgery research team at Columbia University Medical Center have devised a new method for producing a 3D-printed scaffold that forms new menisci (Knee cap). Menisci are the two half-moon-shaped cartilaginous shells that protect the knee joint. Around one million people a year have meniscus surgery due to injuries often related to sports or, with elderly people, because of arthritis. The Columbia research team believes that soon they’ll have a viable alternative to completely removing the meniscus or repairing it with less than ideal results.
