Teacher Gets a 3D Printed Hand Thanks to Motivated Students

Fifth grade students at Pennsylvania's Western Salisbury Elementary School were inspired to reach out to help a teacher receive a new prosthetic hand. Ms. Kathy DeBona's fifth grade students read an article on Newsela as part of their reading comprehension lesson, and used the writing portion of their assignment to send letters to Dr. Albert Chi of Johns Hopkins. Dr. Chi had been in the news for creating low-cost 3D printed prosthetic hands for children, and Ms. DeBona's class wrote in to see if he might be interested in creating a hand for their previous school year's teacher. Fourth grade teacher, Ms. Patti Anderson, had lost a hand due to an accident as a teenager. Dr. Chi and his team were moved by the students' letters and created a zebra-striped prosthetic hand for Ms. Anderson (her design choice), presenting it to her last week when the students and teachers were invited to Johns Hopkins for an educational field trip. Because it is the Flexy-Hand 2 that was printed and fitted to Ms. Anderson, it would be nice if there was attribution to the design used, within this article.

    Many thanks,
