The Full Color Ilios Ray SLA 3D Printer

In quite a remarkable unveiling, Cyprus-based Ilios 3D has today unveiled their Ilios Ray 3D Printer. The printer uses four chambers of resin to allow for the printing of an unlimited number of colors within a project. Priced at over $18,000, the machine certainly is not affordable, however, the technology behind it seems like the price may be warranted. The printer is almost entirely automated from the printing, to the cleaning process to the removal of any object. More details on the Ilios Ray can be found here: http://3dprint.com/27585/ilios-ray-3d-printer-sla/

Below are some general specs for this new 3D printer:
    • Build Envelope: 297mm x 211mm x 300mm
    • Print Resolution: 22 microns
    • Layer Thickness: 6 microns
    • Print Speed: 10 - 15 sec/layer
    • Repeat Accuracy: Less than 0.01mm on 300mm

Below is a picture of the Ilios Ray 3D Printer:

I wouldn't call it an "unveiling", since all they've done is put up some concept graphics and started taking "pre-orders" for a machine that apparently doesn't yet exist. They aren't showing any pictures of the full-color prints they say they'll be able to produce, and looking at what they're showing, I don't see how it could do more than produce prints that were vertically gradated in color, which is not a terrifically useful function. Color me skeptical...

    Full Color?

There is a WORLD of difference between "multi-color" and full color. This is not a full color printer. The full color SLA printer has not yet been invented... but I'm working on it.

Wait, so it empties, cleans and fills the resin tank four times for each layer? Is this thing going to be 2 layers per minute or something? Or does it just mix one color for the whole object from it's reservoirs at the beginning of each print?

The pictures they show seem to indicate the latter.

The Ilios Ray 3D printer was released at the beginning of 2015, and Cyprus-based Ilios says that due to a raft of new features and new functionality, they were forced to move away from open source packages and create completely new and custom solutions for the Ilios family of products. They say that the versatile nature of all Ilios 3D printers means a brand new software package was needed to do all the tasks a 3D designer would normally do and that quite complex mathematics were used for each feature of the software package to make the experience as user friendly as possible. The Ilios 3D software suite can export finished files to a USB drive, a feature they say eliminates the need for a computer all together and is rare in most DLP-based 3D printers.
