University of Nairobi engineering students Roy Ombatti and Harris Nyali were finalists in the 3D4D Challenge, in which 3D printing was to be used as a novel approach to addressing issues for the greater social good. The pair came up with "Happy Feet," 3D printed shoes that can be worn by persons afflicted with jigger flea infections, which can cause foot deformities. The shoes are printed using recycled PET bottle plastic and can be used to provide green jobs and sustainably sourced shoes throughout Kenya. The design was presented at Dutch Design Week.
