Text Creation Software suitable to use with 3D Printers ( export as STL )

Has anyone used or heard about any Text creation programs where I can export to STL? Not looking for software like Word, something that creates 3D Text like "Xara 3D Maker". I know with experienced users they may be able to create lots of Bevels and Text shapes, programs like Xara just make it so much faster.

I make simple text in Sketchup, by placing the test on a surface, and extruding it outwards.

Yes that's what I do through my CAD Program, the simple text is fine, its giving Bevels and different edge shapes that can't be done as easy

Blender paired with Inkscape is a great way to go for both custom and generic fonts. Best of all they are both free.

You can use the lithography instructable : you make a greyscale picture of your text then make a mesh out of it.

The high end version of that : you go in CATIA, export a sketch into your part and extrude it or make a pocket in your solid with it.
